Flesh N Bone:5th Dog Lock Down (Article By The Source.com) |
FLESH-N-BONE: 5TH DOG LOCKED DOWN:
"I understand that the nature of these crimes makes me appear to be a violent person but I am not a violent person. I have never hurt anyone. The only person I have harmed is myself. I am very sorry for my wrongdoings and accept responsibility for these crimes." --Stanley Howse (to his sentencing judge) September 22, 2000
Stanley Howse, better known as Flesh-N-Bone, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on September 22, 2000, on charges that included assault with a deadly weapon and a probation violation.
The original case stems from an incident in January, in which officers from the LAPD responded to a disturbance call at the home of one of Flesh's relatives. On arriving at the scene, police said they came across Howse, a convicted felon, brandishing a loaded, sawed-off shotgun and initially refusing officers' orders to leave the scene. He would eventually plead guilty in Los Angeles Superior Court as part of a plea bargain.
The 10-year sentence comes just prior to the release of Flesh's second solo LP, 5th Dog Let Loose, which is scheduled for an October 10 street date. The Bone Thugs rapper completed tracks for the project before he was incarcerated earlier this year, and relied on his brother, Layzie Bone, and producer Damon Elliott to wrap the album up for him while he was locked down.
The first single from 5th Dog Let Loose, entitled "Way Back," is a tribute to four of hip-hop's fallen soldiers, Eazy-E, Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., and the recently departed Big Pun of the Terror Squad. On the song, Flesh also takes the opportunity to thank the man who gave Bone Thugs-N-Harmony their first big break, Eazy E.
5th Dog Let Loose features guest appearances from fellow Bone Thugs member, Wish Bone, Kurupt, Montell Jordan, and Flesh's real life brother and Bone Thugs member, Layzie Bone.
Flesh-N-Bone is a founding member of Grammy Award-winning rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The Cleveland-based MC released his first solo LP, T.H.U.G.S. (Trues Humbly United Gathering Souls) in 1996.
Thesource.com spoke to Flesh, via phone, just days after his sentence came down, as he was waiting to be transferred from a county jail to the California prison that would hold him for the next several years. Flesh spoke frankly about his 10-year sentence (which he considers lenient), what he has learned from this experience, and how he plans to approach his life from now on.
Thesource.com: So how are you feeling now that you know what the future holds?
Flesh-N-Bone: Man I’m doin' real good, man, being that the situation could have been a lot worse, so, you know, I’m feelin mighty blessed right now.
Thesource.com: Are you happy with the outcome of your prison sentence?
Flesh-N-Bone: Yeah, yeah, I’m real happy with that, you know what I’m sayin. The judge blessed me. I only have to do half-time of the time that she gave me. So I’ll be out of here in about, you know, less than a.. forty some months.
Thesource.com: How many years were you sentenced to, exactly? ten?
Flesh-N-Bone: Yeah, ten years, exactly. But ten years with like 13 months credit. And all I gotta do is serve mid-term of that, half-time of that. So that’s like 4 years. You know, when I was facing somethin' like 19 [years], you know what I’m sayin, [10 years] is considered a miraculous blessing in my eyes, you know.
Thesource.com: What was going through your mind when the jury first found you guilty?
Flesh-N-Bone: I mean, it was shocking, you know what I’m sayin. It was a hard position to be in at the time. And it was like, my whole time, I just stayed humble and kept my faith and prayers up to the Lord and I stayed faithful through the whole situation. But when they delievered that guilty verdict, you know, my heart dropped and I was just like, 'I just got to face what I got to face,' you know. It ain’t no way out of this one. It was a hard predicament for me to go through but the Lord was with me through the whole time. I knew I was going to get punished, but you know, the judge was real lenient on me. I really thank the judge for giving me a.
Thesource.com: What were the exact charges?
Flesh-N-Bone: Assualt, violation of probation and assualt with a semi-automatic weapon.
Thesource.com: How do you see this experience affecting the way you approach your life from here on out?
Flesh-N-Bone: I look at life now as, all the fun time is over with. It’s all strictly work and all bullshit aside. No clowning around. I’m a artist and I got to focus on doing what I do best and that's writing music, writing rymes, and putting records out. No more hanging out for Flesh-N-Bone. No more kickin' it. It’s 'hi' and 'bye,' 'see you later,' 'How you doing'? Other than that I’m through with it. I’m through with all the homeboys. I ain’t got no home boys no more. All I got is wife, kids, family, a mother, my father and this rap industry that I got to deal with. You know, and put out these songs that I’ma be droppin' when I get out of here in a couple of years. Some people never learn. I've learned my lesson.,BR>
Thesource.com: It's kind of ironic that you have an album coming out right now called The 5th Dog Let Loose, and you’ve just been sentenced to several years in prison.
Flesh-N-Bone: The album title is kind of ironic but you can say 5th Dog Let Loose is basically, on this album, I’m just getting loose, I’m just getting raw. Straight uncut. With the material that I am presenting on this album. It can go both ways. The 5th dog lettin' it loose, the way I do, as wicked as I’m coming on this record. Or it can stand for them, the system, cuttin' me loose, bottom line. You know, I put my heart and my soul into that album. And I expect, and I’ve been praying for, the Lord to put his hands on it, bless that. Which I feel he is going to do. I want everybody to feel me on that album and then go pick it up and tell me what you think. Because I’m coming ill with it, you know.
Thesource.com: Have you already started writing for the next album?
Flesh-N-Bone: Yeah, yeah, I’ve been puttin down some new material since I’ve been in here [awaiting trial]. I’ve been using this incarceration time, my solitary mind, I’ve been taking advantage of it. 'Cause the ideas, they come, they come at the drop of a dime. And I’m on top of it. I sit down, even though it’s hard to concentrate. Especially since I’m still in the county [jail]. They haven’t shipped me to the prison yet. So this county is a bunch of drama anyway. So all this drama that’s going on around me, the time that I do get to concentrate, I’m focusing on new lyrics, new ideas, and new songs. I’m doing another Tupac; stack up about a 1000 songs while I’m down here doing this [time].
Thesource.com: Will there be any videos made for any of the songs on the album, since you are not available to do that?
Flesh-N-Bone: I think that we might be doing something for [the first single], "Way Back." Right now, since I’m not available, we’ve gotta use video clips from other videos and portraits and stuff like that, you know what I’m sayin. It’s ways to get around it for artists that’s not available to shoot a video. There’s a lot of new technology, that’s out there that’s able to make it work. Like Tupac, like Biggie Smalls, and Ol' Dirty Bastard when he was incarcerated [during], "Got Your Money." It’s ways to get around, you know.
Thesource.com: Do you think you will continue to write throughout the next couple of years while your locked up?
Flesh-N-Bone: Oh yeah, definitely. I’m always put my rap hand down, I ain't going never fall short of writing my material. That’s going to be something that I always do. These next couple of years, I’ma utilize it to the best of my ability and take advantage of it to the most extent. They just gotta get ready for me when I get out, 'cause I’ma be smashin' in the studio.
Thesource.com: Do you find writing to be therapeutic?
Flesh-N-Bone: I find it very therapeutic. For me anyway, it’s something for me to ge over on the time. It’s helping me.,BR>
Thesource.com: Will [producer] Damon Elliot be able to send you beat tapes so you can write to them?
Flesh-N-Bone: I will be able to get cd’s and tapes with like beats on it. There’s going to be tracks that I can already have ready. That’s definitely going down. Damon, my producer, is definitely going to be up on sending me material so I can knock out songs while I’m here.
Thesource.com: Can we expect about 3 Flesh-N-Bone albums when you get out?
Flesh-N-Bone: Yeah, yeah... back to back. I’m just gone be dropping them down. That’s what I’m looking forward to. So once I get to the [prison], I’ll have more of my freedom to be able to get those shipments with the CDs and tapes and everything and definitely be keeping updated on what’s going on out there in the hip-hop world. Also stacking my material up at the same time. This ain't nothing but making me a stronger person, better artist, and a better husband and father and all that. I’m not perfect, but I’m working on it.
Thesource.com: Is there any thing you want to say to your fans. They won’t be able to see you on tour for the album. They’ll be able to pick up the album, but they won’t be able to actually see you. Any thing you want to say to them?
Flesh-N-Bone: I definitely want to let my fans know that I love every last one of them.

Flesh-N-Bone Avoids Gray-Bar Hotel (Article By Launch.com) |
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Stanley "Flesh-N-Bone" Howse will avoid jail for allegedly beating up a neighbor, thanks to a plea agreement with prosecutors.
In exchange for no-contest pleas to assault and possession of illegal fireworks, prosecutors dropped terrorist threat and weapons charges against Howse and his brother-in-law, Jamar Tarik Cole. The two were accused of pummeling a neighbor who complained of loud music in their suburban Chatsworth, California development.
Howse and Cole are expected to get three years probation when they formally enter their pleas in Superior Court.

4-18-01: L-Burna 'Bummed Out' By Injury On Video Shoot (Article By Sonicnet.com) |
L-Burna, a.k.a. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Layzie Bone, may be forced to wear permanent corrective lenses after suffering a quarter-inch scratch on his right eye during a video shoot for his track "Listen" on Friday.
"I was real bummed out," L-Burna said Tuesday (April 17). "You know thugs don't wear no glasses. But my spirits are better today."
The incident began on Thursday when a makeup artist, spraying the rapper with a mixture of baby oil and water to create the illusion of sweat, accidentally got some of the liquid in L-Burna's eye. A dust particle clung to the oil sometime between Thursday and Friday afternoon and slowly caused the abrasion.
Paramedics were called to the shoot, which took place at a closed mental health hospital in Camarillo, California, north of Los Angeles, on Friday and treated L-Burna with distilled water.
The rapper missed a promotional event for Black Entertainment Television the following day. On Monday, he visited an eye specialist, who explained the seriousness of the injury. He will fly back for a second visit next week.
"I was complaining right after it happened, 'cause it hurt so bad, but I didn't want to sound like I was complaining too much," L-Burna said. "So I toughed it out until Friday. I got the video done. The thing that was most frustrating was that nobody gave a sh-- about me. The production crew just wanted to finish the video. I won't be working with them no more."
L-Burna, born Steven Howse, was filming the video for "Listen" from his debut solo album, Thug by Nature. In the scene filmed on Friday, the rapper watches a doctor "do strange things" to another patient, played by fellow Bone Thugs rapper Wish Bone, and then escapes from a glass enclosure to rescue him, according to Jerry Doby, L-Burna's publicist.
Thug by Nature was released on March 20 and includes the single "Make My Day." He and his fellow MCs in the Cleveland rap collective Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are expected to release an album by the end of the year.
L-Burna is also developing a musical called "Ghetto Fairytales" with his record label, Mo Thugs Records, and rapper Snoop Dogg's Dogghouse imprint. Funk marvel George Clinton and Snoop's Doggy's Angels are in talks to be featured in the production.
"It's my life story incorporated into a stage show," L-Burna said. "It's a fascinating, very personal story. I don't want to give the plot away just yet."

Layzie Bone Says Solo LP All About Respect (Article By Sonicnet.com) |
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Layzie Bone took a cue from the gangsta-favorite flick "Scarface" for his upcoming solo album.
"The theme of the whole album is respect," the MC said last week. "First you get respect, then you get the money, then you get the power. But it all starts with respect."
He said Thug by Nature: a.k.a. Layzie Bone, a.k.a. Ill Burner will hit stores March 6. The album features guest appearances by his fellow members of the Mo Thugs Family as well as Doggy's Angels and several underground rappers. The first single will be "Make My Day."
The Layzie Bone-produced Mo Thugs III: The Mothership ruled the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart for a few weeks over the summer.
The solo album is one of a series of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony spinoffs that includes 1997's Mo Thugs: Family Scriptures and 1998's Mo Thugs Chapter II: Family Reunion.

Music Review: Bizzy Bone (Review By www.manhunt.com) |
The Gift
Bizzy Bone - AMC Records -
Words: James G. Johnson II
I am rather disappointed with the latest release from Bizzy Bone, titled "The Gift". It simply does not measure up to the quality level of any of the previous Bone Thugs~n~Harmony group/solo efforts!. Starting with the production, it comes off as being rather mediocre. Bone normally works with DJ Uneek, who has been their producer since the very beginning, yet, he chooses not to enlist DJ Uneek for any of the songs. This hurts the album very bad, simply because DJ Uneek is the one who has created many of Bone's most popular beats/music.
There are a few OK songs here, but they fail to save the album from disaster. This almost makes you wonder, what is Bizzy Bone REALLY doing while he's rebelling from Bone Thugs~n~Harmony. We can all count on one hand how many times he has appeared with the group within the past 5 years. Speaking of Bone Thugs~n~Harmony, they appear nowhere on this cd, although you do hear their names from time to time as Bizzy takes open shots at them due to their anger with him for his lack of promotion for BTNH releases. Seems a bit childish to me.
The first single on this LP is titled "Father". I am still unable to figure out where the title fits in with the song. It explores all of the problems with society, ranging from today’s misguided children to police brutality. That seems to be the topic for all of the songs on this LP when he's not talking about smoking weed, which brings me to the song "Fried Day". It's probably the best song on the cd, seeing as how it is quite reminiscent of the Bone Thug formula. However, this song can also be found on the soundtrack to the 1999 flick, Next Friday. The soundtrack was actually released in December of 1998. I don't understand the theory of lacing a new cd with old music, but perhaps it's just me. Then, he recently filed a huge lawsuit against Sony Music/Loud Records because he feels that they portray him as a drug user in a video that he voluntarily smokes all the weed he can inhale. If he honestly had a problem with appearing to be a drug user, then he would not have included Fried Day on this cd, a song which openly expresses his joy of smoking Buddha. How hypocritical can he really be? Again I say, perhaps it's just me!
Another problem I see is that he supposedly wants his label of artists(7 Sign Records) to succeed and be showcased, yet, he could not seem to fit any of the label members into any of the 14 songs on this album. Does he really have that ,much love for them, or have they finally given up on him after being on a label for 5 years with no releases to date. Despite the numerous foul-ups on the so-called "Gift", he could still make this album succeed if he promotes it properly, but we all know that Bizzy Bone is NOT a heavy promotion guru, as it is evident by the current problems with Bone Thugs~n~Harmony as a group. Besides, he has already gotten off to a bad start anyway because the first single has not hit radio or television yet, and the album is in stores already. He did place advertisements in magazines, but none of them listed a release date, so not many people even know that the album is in stores yet! All we can do is wait and see what happens.
As I said in the beginning of this review, I am seriously disappointed with this album, simply because as a fan of Bone Thugs, I know the talent that Bizzy has, and I know he can do a lot better than he has done with his music. This is the second time he has disappointed bone fans, as he did the same thing with his first commercially unsuccessful album, "Heaven's Movie". This brings me to the conclusion that he is not meant to be a soloist. I feel that he desperately needs Bone Thugs~n~Harmony, but he's too afraid to admit it. He can't seem to make it past the fact that Eazy-E screwed them over on their deal, and he seems to hold a lot of anger towards the group members due to their success as solo artists without him. Hopefully,. he can put aside all of the anger, arrogance, and jealousy to reunite with Bone Thugs~n~Harmony once and for all to create quality music!
